Bill McQuaid received his B.A. in Psychology from Emory University (1978) and his M.F.A. in Photography (1988) from the University of Florida, where he studied with Jerry Uelsmann and Evon Streetman.

In 1989, McQuaid received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Florida Arts Council and in 1990, was the recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Art Ventures Fund, an NEA pilot program administered through the Jacksonville Community Foundation. During his graduate studies at the University of Florida, he received the University's Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching.

As a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, McQuaid taught all levels of photography at both the University of Florida and Northern Kentucky University. In addition, he taught at The Southeast Center for PhotoGraphic Studies in Daytona Beach (DBCC).
